Selling ads against search - it seemed like such a simple thing. But while CEO Terry Semel fumbled and bumbled, Google pulled ahead.

By Fred Vogelstein

Terry Semel was pissed. The Yahoo CEO had offered to buy Google for roughly $3 billion, but the young Internet search firm wasn't interested. Once upon a time, Google's founders had come to Yahoo for an infusion of cash; now they were turning up their noses at what Semel believed was a perfectly reasonable offer. Worse, Semel's lieutenants were telling him that, in fact, Google was probably worth at least $5 billion.

This was way back in the summer of 2002, two years before Google went public. An age before Google's stock soared above $500 a share, giving the company a market value of $147 billion -- right behind Chevron and just ahead of Intel.

Countries with little copper legacy are doing their best to bypass the centuries old access methodology and going straight to fiber, stringing it right to their citizens’ doorsteps. This is especially true in the case of smaller nations – like Slovenia and now Lithuania, one of the former Soviet republics.

TEO, the Lithuanian incumbent that was privatized back in 1998 (and now co-owned by a consortium that includes TeliaSonera) has undertaken a FTTH build out that will bring speeds of up to 1 Gigabit/second. The FTTH network will be rolled out in the five biggest cities of Lithuania, with Vilnius likely to see the launch of in June 2007.

What do I need to use Yeigo?

  • A Yeigo compatible mobile handset.
  • The Yeigo application to be installed on your mobile handset.

As long as there is an active connection to the internet, Yeigo can support voice calls and SMS messaging.

How does Yeigo really work?

Yeigo uses your handset?s connection to the internet to make calls over the internet using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies, instead of the traditional networks used for cellular calls. Your phone can connect to the internet over Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE, 3G and other emerging mediums.

Through its network of servers, Yeigo is able to support VoIP calls made through the Yeigo application and terminate them to the required destination world-wide. With its quality infrastructure, Yeigo is able to offer secure conversations and fine sound quality.

Yeigo is optimised to support VoIP calls over the available data connections by dynamically and seamlessly adjusting to the network conditions and capabilities of the mobile handset, even when in motion, giving you the very best in VoIP communication.

Google phone rumor, end of 2007? - A report from Digitimes (via Engadget) says the Google phone is coming from HTC, as early as the end of 2007. If that’s really true, I’m not sure which I want more, iPhone or Google phone.
